My son and I had an experience a few weeks ago that could have been tragic, but thank God, it ended without harm. This PSA has been on my mind and the need to share is heavy.
Parents, please be sure to teach your toddlers what to do should they find themselves alone in a car and unable to get out. Unbeknownst to me, my son age 4, went to our car to retrieve his shoe while playing outside. He got in, but could not get out because of the active child locks on the back door.
After noticing that I had not seen him in a few minutes, I began to search and found him crying and sweating profusely, locked in my car on a hot summer day.
He was hot and scared and stuck.
After calming and cooling him, I showed him how to climb into the front seat and exit through the front doors. Additionally, I told him that if that didn’t work, he should honk the horn continuously until someone comes to help. It sounds rudimentary, but this experience showed me that parents can’t assume that our little ones know basic solutions to dangerous situations, no matter how simple.
With a thankful heart and the well-being of our little ones, I hope you will ask your kids if they know how to get out of a locked car.
